Year 10

Year 10 is a critical year in the development of young men. It is a year of choices, of embarking upon pathways, and the Year 10 curriculum reflects this reality. Year 10 students of St Joseph’s College have the opportunity to participate in a diverse and fulfilling curriculum that reflects their interests and needs, incorporates the skills required for the Twenty-First Century, taps into their talents and is built on strong academic principles.

The curriculum on offer at Year 10 provides students with choice as they start to explore their interests and possible directions. The core curriculum ensures that all students have the most solid of foundations in subjects such as Religious Education, English, Mathematics, History, Science and Physical Education so that their transition to VCE and VCAL studies in following years is as smooth as possible. In addition to the core studies, Year 10 students may choose from a number of elective studies in The Arts, Languages, Humanities, Commerce or Technology which are geared towards preparation for VCE studies. Similarly, students may select from specialised Science subjects in addition to their core Science subjects which are focussed on providing them with a head start in VCE Science studies such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Other programs, such as the Lighthouse program (where Year 10 students undertake literacy training and then assist primary school students with their literacy) and the Work Experience program, allow students to work independently for tangible results.

The Year 10 curriculum also allows students to extend themselves in several academic areas. Year 10 students are able to participate in Unit 1 and 2 VCE studies as part of their Year 10 program, with many VCE subjects available for acceleration.

Similarly, Year 10 students may participate in Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects as part of their Year 10 studies, which allows them to undertake a TAFE-level, nationally recognised Certificate I or II in a variety of vocational areas.
